Charles Hewett of Westborough, Massachusetts, a cherished husband, father, step-father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully at the age of 95, on July 26th at his home, surrounded by his loving family and caretakers. Born on July 24, 1929, in Boston, Massachusetts, to the late Robert and Mary (Norton) Hewett, Charles grew up in Boston and Rutland, Vermont.
An accomplished athlete, Charles was an avid cyclist and speed skater. His passion for cycling led him to win a gold medal in the 4000 Meter Team Pursuit at the 1959 Pan American Games and to compete in the 1960 Rome Olympics. He won the 1948 Boston Silver Skates medal for speed skating. His dedication and achievements in sports were a significant part of his life.
Charles proudly served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War, contributing his athletic skills and dedication to his country. Following his military service, he embarked on a successful career in the corporate world, becoming a VP of Sales for the Schwinn Bicycle Company in his long career in the sports industry.
He is survived by his loving wife, Gale Hewett; children, Patrick (Stephanie) Hewett, Michael (Becky) Hewett, Brian (Carolyn Gibbons) Hewett, and Pamela (Rick) Clay-Storm; stepchildren, Lori (Jeff) Miller, Beth (Brian Kane) Riedel; grandchildren, Sean, Brendan, Oliver, Ethan; and step-grandchildren, Katherine, Lindsay, Bryce, Brennen. Charles was preceded in death by his brother Robert (Lois) Hewett and former spouse Arlene (Ackerly) Hewett.
A memorial service is planned for 1:00 P.M. on Saturday, September 28th, in the Pickering & Son Westborough Funeral Home, 62 West Main St., Westborough, MA.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the charity of your choice, honoring Charles's generous spirit.
Charles Hewett's life was marked by his remarkable achievements, deep family bonds, and enduring contributions to the cycling community and country. His legacy will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
