E. Evelyn (Stanford) Arnold, 88, a lifelong resident of Westborough, passed away on Tuesday, January 26, 2016 after an illness. She was the beloved wife of Zane H. Arnold. They celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary last October.
Evelyn was born in Taunton, the daughter of the late Alice L. (Stanford) Haven. She was raised in Westborough by her grandparents, Frank and Emma (Johnson) Stanford. She was a 1945 graduate of Westborough High School where she played varsity basketball.
Evelyn, and her husband Zane, with the help of their sons, owned and operated Arnold’s Orchard on Spring Road for 50 years. At one time, she sang in the choir of the The Congregational Church of Westborough and the Westborough Community Chorus. Evelyn was a naturally gifted artist, serving as president of the Westborough Artists Association, and was involved in several art shows presented by the group. She served on the Westborough Open Space Committee for 20 years. During the 1950’s, she was a Cub Scout den mother. She was also a Charter member of Friends of Upton State Forest. Since 1988, she and her husband enjoyed the pastoral, mountain views at their second home in Lower Waterford, Vermont, where she loved going to church suppers and fall foliage festivals. She loved German Shepherd dogs, cats, and was especially fond of her latest cat, “Misty.”
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, Russell B. Arnold and his wife Ellen M. Chase of Upton, and Gary Z. Arnold and his wife Jeanne Frantz-Arnold of Westborough. Other survivors include her grandchildren April B. Kassatly and her husband, Russell of Sutton, Bonnie P. Bujak and her husband, John of Leicester, as well as six great-grandchildren, Ryan, Adam, Lindsay and Reeg Kassatly, and Bryson and Grace Bujak. She was the sister of Christina MacConnell of Westborough. Other survivors include a dear friend, Frank Evans, of Marlborough who was raised on the farm with her.
Her funeral service will be held on Monday, February 1, at 10:00 A.M. in The Congregational Church of Westborough, 57 West Main St., Westborough. Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery.
Calling hours at the David A. Pickering Westborough Funeral Home, 62 West Main St., Westborough, are Sunday, January 31, from 2 to 5 P.M.
