Elio J. Castignoli, 90, of Northborough and a former lifelong resident of Somerville, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, on Tuesday, October 10, 2017 at the UMASS Memorial Hospital in Worcester.
Born and raised in Somerville, he was the only son of the late Federico and Marina (Mazzaschi) Castignoli. He graduated from Somerville High School in 1944 and later joined the United States Army where he proudly fought in the Philippines and Okinawa, Japan, during World War II.
Prior to retirement, Elio worked most of his career for the City of Somerville in the Sanitation Department, retiring in 1991 after almost 30 years of service. He was a simple man who enjoyed playing cards, reading the paper, and especially spending time with his family. He enjoyed his Italian Heritage and spent many days with his friends at the Dante Club in Somerville. He was also the lifelong caregiver to his mother, Marina, prior to her passing.
Elio is survived by his sister, Vilma C. Henderson and her husband, William, of Westborough; his nephew, David Henderson and his wife, Carla, of Mamaronek, NY; his niece, Nancy Federici of Northborough; and his great nieces and nephews, Nicole and Andrew Federici, and Lauren, Julia, and William Henderson.
His funeral Mass will be held on Friday, November 24, at 10:30 A.M. in St. Luke the Evangelist Church, 70 West Main St., Westborough. Burial will follow in St. Michael’s Cemetery, Forrest Hills, Boston.
