Gabor Vermes, 88, a longtime resident of Westborough, passed away peacefully on January 22, 2025. Gabor was born on May 5,1936 in Budapest, Hungary to the late Istvan and Maria (Andraska) Vermes. After graduating from college in Budapest, Gabor fought for the Hungarian Freedom Fighters during the Hungarian Uprising in 1956. He suffered significant wounds which brought him to a hospital in West Germany. There, he was met by Vice President Nixon who extended an invitation to the United States under the sponsorship of U.S. Army Captain Julian Everett.
Gabor earned a master’s degree in mechanical engineering from Saint Louis University in 1958 and took a position with Douglas Aircraft in New York. Gabor was a successful engineer, ultimately leading to his respected position at Wellesley College and Massachusetts Institute of Technology as a professor of mechanical physics. There he designed and built surgical manipulators for breast cancer as well as cameras used for aerospace.
In 1961, Gabor met the love of his life, Maria (Boiardi) Vermes, at a tea dance in Manhattan. Six months after meeting, they wed and spent 60 wonderful years of marriage together prior to her passing in 2022. They moved to Westborough in 1972 where they laid their roots. Although now with his loving wife, Gabor leaves his three adoring children, Ann Marie (Tom Wagner) Vermes of Westborough, Robert (Shirley) Vermes of Boston, and Frank (Mary) Vermes of Berlin. Gabor was also the proud “Grandpa” of six grandchildren, Krystle (Manny) Veiga, Angela (Stephen) Loveless, Haley (Paige) Marze, Christina (Frank) DeStefano, Michael (Nikki) Vermes, and Bryan Vermes. He was also the beloved “Great-Grandpa” to his five dear great-grandchildren, Nathan, James, and Michelle Loveless, and Lila and Jack DeStefano. Gabor is also survived by his sister-in-law, Bruna Zorovic, as well as his two loving nieces, Adriane (Mark) Gallagher, and Denise Zorovic.
The family is forever grateful to Lynne Peters, Vanilce (Val) Dearden and Pollyanna Pereira for their kindness, generosity and friendship on caring for our ailing father. Their dedication and love they showed my father, and the family will never be forgotten.
