Westborough

WESTBOROUGH- Gertrude Ellen McCarthy died peacefully in the early morning of May 15, 2012 at the Beaumont Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Westborough, MA.

She was born on July 19, 1921 to the late Gertrude and John Vancky.  In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her devoted husband of forty years, John J. McCarthy and by four of her six siblings—Helen, Nicholas, William, and John.

Gert was raised in Wallingford, CT and lived with her husband and children in Connecticut, California, and Massachusetts.  She was a resident of Northborough for over fifty years, and it was here that she raised her family and made many friends—especially her many bridge partners.  Gert was a wonderful cook and enjoyed preparing meals for family, friends, and neighbors.  She was a devoted, passionate, and knowledgeable fan of the Red Sox and Celtics.  She took pride in her children and had great pleasure in watching her grandchildren grow.

Gert is survived by: her children, Maureen Tighe of Ridgefield, CT and Kevin McCarthy of Davidson, NC; by her grandchildren Zoe Gurrieri, Mia Gurrieri, Cormac McCarthy, and Jack McCarthy; and by her sisters, Irene Taylor and Betty Hill and by numerous nieces and nephews.

A private service will take place in Ridgefield, CT to inter the remains of Gert and her late husband John.  It was their wish that they eventually be interred together in a place near family.

The family wishes to thank the staff of Beaumont Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for their kindness and compassion and for the wonderful care provided to Gert during the final three years of her life.

Memorials can be made to the Duke Pediatric Bone Marrow Transplant Program, Duke University Medical Center, PO Box 3350, Durham, NC 27710.
