Janos Pitlik

April 11, 1963 – February 5, 2021 (age 57)

Janos Pitlik of Westborough, MA passed away from COVID on Friday February 5, 2021 at UMass Memorial Medical Center Belmont St. Critical Care Unit.

Born in Kemecse, Hungary, Janos was the only child of the late Janos Pitlik Sr. and Margit Ballai of Tiszabercel, Hungary.

Janos attended high school in Tiszavasvari and graduated from Lajos Kossuth University as a chemist and English-Hungarian translator in chemistry. He later obtained his PhD in organic chemistry at the University of Debrecen, Hungary, and then conducted postdoctoral studies at the Dyson Perrins Laboratory at University of Oxford, England and Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD. Janos was employed by Vertex Pharmaceuticals in Cambridge, MA, where he led a group of chemists developing protease inhibitors, including Telaprevir for the potential treatment of hepatitis C virus infections. During his career, Janos authored dozens of research articles and patents related to beta-lactam antibiotics and viral protease inhibitors.

Janos was an avid reader, loved history, and was passionate about basketball. He was also a lover of nature and enjoyed hiking and fishing. Throughout his life, Janos supported causes around wild life conservation and Native American culture.

Janos leaves behind his two children Peter and Viktoria Pitlik, their mother Edit Tarcsa, and numerous family members in Hungary.

Mély fájdalommal tudatjuk, hogy Pitlik János Westborough, MA lakos 2021 Február 5-én, életének 57-ik évében, COVID szövödményei következtében elhunyt.

János Kemecsén született és egyetlen gyermeke volt a néhai Pitlik János és Ballai Margit tiszaberceli lakosoknak. Középiskolába a tiszavasvári gimnáziumba járt, majd a Kossuth egyetemen szerzett diplomát Vegyész és Angol-Magyar szakforditóként. Doktori fokozatát szerves kémiából szerezte, majd poszt-doktori tanulmányokat végzett Oxfordban a Dyson Perrins laboratóriumban és a Johns Hopkins egyetemen Baltimorban. Ezt követöen a Vertex Pharmaceuticals cégnél dolgozott, ahol egy csoport vegyész vezetöjeként virus eredetü proteáz gátlókat szintetizált, többek között a Telaprevirt, a hepatitisz C fertözések potenciális kezelésére. Karrierje alatt János föleg béta-lactám antibiotikumok és virális proteáz inhibitorok szintetizálására összpontosított és munkáját több tucatnyi cikkben és szabadalomban foglalta össze.

Jancsi imádott olvasni, föleg a történelemröl, szeretett turázni, horgászni és kosárlabdát nézni. Rajongott a természetért és sokat adományozott környezet védelemmel és amerikai indián rezervátumok támogatásával kapcsolatos céloknak.

Jancsi maga után hagyta két gyerekét Pétert és Viktoriát és édesanyjukat, Tarcsa Editet Westboroughban, valamint keresztlányait és számos nagynénit, nagybácsit és unoka testvéreket Magyarországon.
