Lawrence "Larry" Boyd, age of 88, of Bradenton, FL and formerly of Westborough, MA, passed peacefully on August 10, 2023. Larry was the son of the late Frank J. Boyd, Sr. and Bernice M. (Randall) Boyd. Larry was born in Brockton, Massachusetts on October 24, 1934.
Larry graduated from Howard High School in West Bridgewater in 1953. Larry played varsity football, basketball and baseball. After graduation, he went to Springfield College in Springfield, Massachusetts. While at Springfield College he was a member of the varsity wrestling and gymnastics teams. Upon graduation from Springfield College in 1957 with a degree in Physical Education he joined the Army Reserves for eleven years. Larry was hired to teach and coach at North Brookfield Jr. and Sr. High School in North Brookfield, Massachusetts. While at North Brookfield, he taught Biology and Physical Education for fourteen years. Larry coached baseball, basketball and soccer. Larry won several league championships in basketball.
He was a member of the Sportsman’s Club and was Playground Director for many years. He became a member of the Knights of Columbus. During the summer months, he went part-time to Springfield College to earn his Master of Science Degree in Physical Education in 1970. Larry left North Brookfield to become the Director of Physical Education at Quinsigamond Community College. While at Quinsigamond, he was Assistant Baseball Coach, Assistant Basketball Coach and later became the Head Basketball Coach. Larry also started and coached the men’s soccer team at Quinsigamond.
In 1976, Larry took the position of Director of Athletics and was a faculty member at Framingham State College. While at Framingham State he served on MASCAC, ECAC and NCAA committees for many years. Larry also served many years as the Commissioner of the New England Football Conference. Larry started the First Annual Framingham State College Athletic Golf Tournament. He also started the Framingham State College Athletic Hall of Fame, and he himself was inducted into the Hall in 2006.
Retiring in 1996, Larry went to work part-time at Julio’s Liquor Store in Westborough, MA. He joined and played golf at Westborough Country Club. At this time, he organized the Knights of Columbus Charity Golf Tournament. Wanting to play more golf, he moved and purchased a mobile home in Bradenton, Florida. Since moving to Florida, he would take one and sometimes two Caribbean cruises a year and was an avid reader.
He is survived by his five children, Steven Boyd of West Brookfield, Massachusetts, Robert Boyd of Rutland, Massachusetts, Susan Boyd of Nashua, New Hampshire, Debra Boyd of North Brookfield, Massachusetts, and Patricia Fowble of Southbridge, Massachusetts.
Larry is also survived by his siblings, Francis J. Boyd, Jr. and his wife Maryann, and his sister Joan Whitney. He was predeceased by siblings Doreen Burors and William J. Boyd, Sr. He leaves behind nephews, nieces, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
His funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 AM on Wednesday, October 25, in St. Luke the Evangelist Church, 70 West Main Street, Westborough. Burial, with military honors, will follow in St. Luke’s Cemetery, Westborough.
Members of Council 85, Knights of Columbus, will conduct a prayer service at 10 AM prior to the funeral Mass.
