April 14, 1936 — April 13, 2024

WESTBOROUGH

Lynne C. Caldwell, 87, of Westborough, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 13, 2024. She was the wife of the late Chester R. “Chet” Caldwell.

She is survived by three children: Corby R. Caldwell and his wife, Kimberly, of Westborough; Cheryl O. Buckley and her husband, Tim, of Paxton; Cynthia L. Foster and her husband, DC, of Phoenix, AZ. Five grandchildren: Jazmyn, Alyxander, Kelsey, Drew, and Maisie; four great grandchildren, as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was predeceased by her brother Leigh Corby.

Born in Brooklyn, NY, she was the daughter of the late Philip and Helen (Ord) Corby. She was raised and educated in Larchmont, NY and was a 1953 graduate of Mamaroneck High School. During her high school years Lynne excelled in competitive swimming, leading to competition at the national level. In 1994, she was inducted into the Mamaroneck High School Athletic Hall of Fame.

Following high school, Lynne attended Skidmore College before finishing her undergraduate studies at the University of Wisconsin, earning a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education. Upon graduation, she began her teaching career in Grosse Point, MI, continuing to Greenwich, CT, where she earned a master’s degree in dance education at the Teachers College at Columbia.

While in Greenwich, Lynne met Chet on a blind date. They married shortly thereafter in February of 1965. They resided briefly in Melrose and Worcester, MA before settling down in Westborough in 1970.

In Westborough, Lynne continued to develop her passion for teaching. She worked at the Westborough YWCA for 18 years where she taught exercise, dance aerobics, and swimming. Her teaching career extended with the Westborough Recreation Department, the Westborough Senior Center, and the Westborough Tennis and Swim Club.  She was also the Westborough High School JV field hockey coach for 10 years.

Lynne was an active member of the Congregational Church of Westborough, serving as both deacon and head of collations for many years. She enjoyed volunteering for several organizations through the church, relishing the mission trips to New Orleans to volunteer as a cook for Habitat for Humanity workers following Hurricane Katrina.

In her retirement, Lynne enjoyed extensive travel. She visited Australia, New Zealand, England, Europe, Iceland, Madagascar, and China. Additionally, she would travel frequently to the southwest to visit family, accompanied many times by her sister-in-law and dear friend who predeceased her late last year, Shirley Caldwell Anderson.

Lynne took great pleasure tending to her many gardens over the years. She was known to stop and admire the many varieties of flora she encountered both at home and during international travel. She found great enjoyment volunteering at Tower Hill Botanical Garden in Boylston. Most recently she enjoyed flower arranging and gardening clubs at Whitney Place Assisted Living, where she has resided the past 3 years.

Her funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 18, at 10:00am at the Congregational Church of Westborough, 57 West Main St., Westborough. Burial will follow at Pine Grove Cemetery.

Calling hours will be held on Friday, May 17, from 5 to 7pm at Pickering & Son Westborough Funeral Home, 62 West Main St., Westborough.
