Maria Vermes, 82, a longtime resident of Westborough, passed away on Friday, January 7, 2022 at Milford Regional Medical Center. She was the loving wife of Gabor S. Vermes, celebrating 60 years of marriage.
Born in Vezzolacca, Italy, Maria was the daughter of the late Alfredo and Ida (Locchi) Boiardi. She was raised in the Province of Piacenza Italy, where she had a hard but idyllic childhood with her parents, sister, maternal grandparents, and uncles. She came by boat to the United States in October of 1951 where she settled in New York City with her parents and sister, graduating from Julia Richmond High School in Manhattan. It was at a Manhattan “Tea Dance” where she met a young “Educated Man”, as she always reminded her family, and fell in love. Her husband said it was “love at first sight”, he proposed 6 weeks later, and they were married 6 months later.
Maria reveled as a homemaker, venturing out to the working world when her children “left the nest”. She was employed for 36 years as the accounts payable clerk for the Entwistle Co. in Hudson Ma. She retired numerous times but always returned to enjoy the camaraderie with her close-knit peers and working for the CFO Tony Celozzi. With the urging of her family, she finally retired at the young age of 80.
In addition to her loving husband, Maria is survived by her three adoring children, Ann Marie Vermes and her partner, Tom Wagner of Westborough, Robert (Shirley) Vermes of Boston, and Frank (Mary) Vermes of Westborough. Maria also leaves six grandchildren, Krystle (Manny) Veiga, Angela (Stephen) Loveless, Haley Vermes, Christina Vermes and her fiancé Frank DeStefano, Michael Vermes, and Bryan Vermes, as well as three great-grandchildren, Nathan, James, and Michelle Loveless. Maria is also survived by her sister, Bruna Zorovic, of Framingham, Ma. Nieces Adriane (Mark) Gallagher, Denise Zorovic, Grandnephew Andrew and grandniece Amanda. Maria is predeceased by Mel Botsian the companion of her sister and grandniece Adriane Gallagher.
Maria’s funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, January 13, at 10:30 A.M. at St. Luke the Evangelist Church, 70 West Main St., Westborough. Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery. There are no calling hours.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the MDS-Foundation.org
