Michael Louis Barretti, Sr., 79, passed away after a brief illness on February 8, 2025, in New Bedford, Massachusetts. Born on May 12, 1945, in the Bronx, New York, Michael led a beautiful life defined by his service to his country, his devotion to faith, and his unwavering love for family and friends.
Michael's early years were spent in the Bronx, where he attended PS 76 before continuing his education at Mount Saint Michael Academy. He went on to earn his Bachelor's Degree from St. John's University and later received an M.B.A. from Suffolk University. He worked for Polaroid and served as a hospital administrator before founding his own healthcare consulting company. Although he found success in the business world, he discovered his true calling in teaching. As a professor at Suffolk University, he oversaw the Executive MBA program for many years and remained involved as a professor emeritus after retirement. His impact on his students was profound, as evidenced by the many who remained in touch and regarded him as a mentor.
Beyond his career, Michael was deeply committed to the service of both his country and his community. A retired Marine Corps Major and decorated Vietnam veteran, Michael's military service was a defining aspect of his life. He was a Purple Heart recipient and remained closely connected to the Marine Corps community throughout his life. He cherished reunions with his Basic Training class from 1965 and took great pride in supporting fellow Marines through various initiatives. Locally, he served as chairman of the Finance Committee in Westborough and was a dedicated member of the Veteran’s Advisory Board. His commitment to supporting veterans extended to his work with the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation, an organization very close to his heart.
Faith also played a central role in Michael’s life, and he was an active member of St. Luke’s Parish in Westborough, Massachusetts since 1974. He was heavily involved with the parish Bereavement Group, which he joined following the death of his wife, and his wisdom provided spiritual comfort and support to people struggling with grief.
In addition to these aspects of his life, Michael found the most joy in his family. He married the love of his life, Maria Cardinale, after a courtship that began when they were both nine years old. He was a wonderful and loving father to Dina Lattanzi and Michael Barretti, Jr., a thoughtful and supportive father-in-law to Peter Lattanzi, Sr. and Aileen (Prosser) Barretti, and a fun-loving and kind “Papa” and “Pops” to his six beautiful grandchildren: Victoria, Peter, Camilla, Dylan, Gavin, and Lochlan. He shared a deep and affectionate bond with his sister Maryanne Barretti and her husband Bill Sunkel, and his cousins Lucia Barretti and Michael Bellotti held special places in his life. Michael was predeceased by his wife Maria Cardinale Barretti, parents Louise and Pasquale Barretti, and uncle Pat Silvestri.
Michael embraced life with an enthusiasm and energy which was fueled by his frankly astonishing collection of espresso moka pots. Whether it was traveling all over the world, maintaining his legendary social schedule, following the New York Yankees, visiting Maine to spend time with his daughter’s family, or cheering on his grandchildren at their games, Michael made time for those he loved and his generosity knew no bounds. An exceptional cook, he delighted in preparing meals that brought family and friends together, ensuring there was always more than enough for his guests to take home. His meticulously maintained backyard—adorned Italian-style with the requisite café lights and fig trees—was a place of joy, hospitality, and countless wonderful memories for so many.
Michael’s warmth left an indelible mark on all who knew him. He was not only a devoted husband, father, grandfather, father-in-law, fellow Marine, and friend, but also a source of strength and inspiration. His calendar was always full, and he had so many people who genuinely enjoyed his company. Michael's legacy of service, dedication, and love will live on in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him--he will be forever loved, and forever remembered.
