Hi Family and Friends,
With sadness and joy I'm letting you know that my brother Sal Melfa passed away at 95 on Sunday 12/23 a day before Christmas Eve at a Nursing Home in Westboro MA.
He did so in peace and without suffering with his rosary in his hands after he had watched Mass on Television as he did every day!
It was truly a blessing and a great Christmas gift for Sal to meet Jesus whom he loved very much!
Salvatore was born 1/17/1923 and was going to be 96 next month. He was born and brought up in New York City with me and our sister Jean Tedone who is 93 and is in Assisted Living in NJ.
Sal whom I loved so much was my Big "Brudder", 13 years older than me and he loved me so much as a youngster taking me to ball games, the beaches, Central Park (picture attached), etc.
He worked with my father at their company in Manhattan and lived in Glen Head on Long Island with his wife, Fermina, who passed away 5 years ago. I will be bringing his ashes next week to the cemetery where she is buried with their daughter who died at birth.
Sal loved his country. He tried to enlist in World War II but was rejected because of a heart murmur and therefore decided to join the National Guard.
He was an accomplished musician who played in a band, at Carnegie Hall, and composed some of his own music. He loved the Piano Keyboard in his room he was working hard to play with his arthritic hands.
Since he has no family in NY, I brought him up to Westboro about 1.5 years ago so that we could be close to each other again. This time together has been truly wonderful for both of us, reviewing old memories, meeting my family and friends, going to the outdoor summer concerts at Beaumont Nursing, meeting and talking about old stories with the other residents & evangelizing the staff. We also had a lot of "fun" dealing with a nursing home's problems, -- complaining, following up, details, nitpicking and lot of stories with the staff.
Please Pray for Sal. Thank You!
Love,
Vic Melfa
