Shirley Stone Sumner, 93, of Westborough, Massachusetts passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 3, 2018 at the Beaumont Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing Center. She was the loving wife of the late Charles Sumner III of Fairport and Honeoye Falls, New York.
Born in Wolcott, NY, she was the daughter of the late Lawrence and Linda (Cahoon) Stone. Shirley was raised and educated in Wolcott and was a graduate of Rochester Institute of Technology.
Shirley was foremost a devoted mother to her four children. She also managed the books for her husband’s metal plating and silver restoration business for many years.
She was a member of the First Congregational Church in Fairport, NY for 56 years, as well as a regular member of the Church’s Morning Circle and the Rochester Women’s Twig Organization.
Shirley is survived by four children, Shelley S. Dropkin and her husband, Keith, of Framingham formerly of Southborough, MA, Charles R. “Chip” Sumner of Fairport, NY, Roger C. Sumner and his wife, Amy, of Maple Glen, PA and Eric E. Sumner and his wife, Pamela, of Scottsdale, AZ; one sister Ruth Stone DeVries of Fairport, NY; and eight grandchildren, Stephen and Korey Dropkin, Curtis, Perie and Stuart Sumner and Ethan, Adam and Owen Sumner.
A local memorial service will be held later this fall, followed by a service in the spring with family and friends in Shirley and Charles’ hometown of Fairport, NY.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Shirley’s memory may be made to the Sumner Youth Support Fund, in care of the First Congregational Church, 26 East Church Street, Fairport, NY 14450. This fund supports young adults in their pursuit of a degree from an institution of higher education.
