Zachary W. Esper, 97, of Westborough, MA, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 17, 2024, at The Christopher House.
Born and raised in Worcester, MA, he attended North High School, Holy Cross College, and completed graduate studies in engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute and Northeastern University.
He was married for 33 years to Ruth (Rondeau) at the time of her death. Zachary is survived by his four children, Zachary Esper, Jr. of Grafton, MA, Claire Chapin of Shrewsbury, MA, John Esper of West Roxbury, MA and Elaine Weston of Carver, MA, and eight grandchildren.
As a professional engineer, Zachary was employed by consulting engineering firms, where his career brought him across the globe. His career highlights included proposing the survivable satellite communications system for intercontinental ballistic missile sites at NORAD, spending twelve months in Thule, Greenland constructing the U.S. Airforce base, and as the chief field engineer for a twenty-mile section of the Massachusetts Turnpike, including 42 bridges.
He enjoyed golf, the arts, and as an avid traveler, Zachary visited over 50 countries during his lifetime, including 37 trips to Hawaii. Zachary’s long life and wide-ranging experiences made for great story telling during the holidays and at family gatherings.
He was an active member of the community, church and social clubs, including the Worcester Greendale Men’s Club.
Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend visiting hours at the Pickering & Son Westborough Funeral Home, 62 West Main St., Westborough, MA. on Sunday, July 21 from 2:00 P.M - 5:00 P.M.
A funeral mass will be held Monday, July 22 at 10:30 A.M. at St. Luke the Evangelist Church, 70 West Main St., Westborough, MA.
Entombment will follow at Notre Dame Cemetery, Worcester.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Zachary's honor may be made to St. Luke’s Church and the Westborough Senior Center.
